One of the most famous and applauded activities held in the city are its marathons. Half marathon and Idaho potato marathon are the most famous ones in which large sections of people of different age groups participate actively. These are organized by YMCA Treasure valley family and Idaho Potato commission sponsors it. The marathon features a 13.1 mile point to point route that takes runners along the trails of the Boise River in the north of the town, parks, crossing over bridges and highlighting beautiful natural views of the lined trails of tree along the bodies of water. The three decade old famous marathon also features a 5K run and walk and 10K run for its runners. There are huge numbers of participants. In the year 2009, roughly 850 participants took part in the marathon. The course of half marathon race starts at Lucky Peak Lake which is situated on the western edge of state recreation area of Lucky Peak Lake. From here runners are routed on the winding course by the rivers which heads northwest through southeast Boise passing through number of green space areas and small parks. According to the organizers reports, the popularity of the Boise Idaho marathon has grown remarkably in the recent years. The number of participants registered of all four races which were just 1500 in 2008 straight away jumped to 1900 in 2009, with roughly 900 participants in running and walking and 125 runners in the full marathon of 5K and 10K races.
